Symptoms of Lice
How do I know if I have lice?
Because lice are fast moving, you will not always see them when checking the head. Look instead for the eggs which are motionless.Lice eggs (nits) look like a grain of sand about ¼ inch from the scalp but they CANNOT be easily removed from the hair. They are “glued” on to the hair shaft. Removal requires pinching the egg between two fingers and firmly pulling it out the length of the hair. Lice eggs resemble dandruff, flakes of skin, sand, or salt; however, dandruff or sand can easily be blown or shaken out of hair; nits cannot.
White Paper Test
Eggs can appear white when on the hair. When eggs are placed on white paper, they resemble flecks of pepper (gray, brown and black ) in color. Symptoms of Head Lice
- Mild to intense itching primarily behind the ears and at the nape of the neck.
- The sensation of something moving or crawling in the hair.
- Mild to moderate irritation at the nape of the neck. This can be caused by scratching or an allergic reaction to the parasite's saliva secreted during feedings.
- Symptoms may not appear for 3-4 weeks.
- Be aware, it is possible for a person to have lice and never show symptoms.
