Life Cycle
1. Egg is laid on hair shaft. Egg is called a 'nit'.
2. Nymph (baby louse) emerges after 6-7 days.
3. First molt (sheds outer layer) 2 days after hatching.
4. Second molt (sheds outer layer) 5 days after hatching.
5. Third molt (final outer layer shedding) 10 days after hatching.
6. Emerging from their third molt as adult lice, the female and males begin to reproduce.
7. Female lays first egg 1 or 2 days after mating.
8. Female can lay approximately 6 to 10 eggs per day for the next 16 days.
9. Having lived 32 to 35 days the louse dies.
The head louse spends its entire life on the human head. Each louse needs to consume a blood meal every 3-6 hours. If removed from the head (its food source) it begins to perish. One adult female louse can lay up to 150 eggs during its lifetime.
