Facts of Lice
Lice and Nit Facts
There are 4 types of lice: Head, body, pubic and animal. None of the mentioned lice transfer to other parts of the body or to animals/pets. You CANNOT contract head lice from your pet and vice versa.
Lice are wingless parasites about the size of a sesame seed. They DO NOT fly, jump, hop or swim.
Head lice swiftly crawl from person to person primarily from direct head to head contact.
The sharing of hats, combs, brushes, hair accessories, clothing, and beach/bath towels can also cause spreading.
Nits (lice eggs) are usually found behind the ears and at the neckline. They are laid approximately 1/4 inch from the scalp.
Adult head lice are the size of a sesame seed and are rust in color. They can lay up to 150 eggs during their life span.
Lice have an approximate lifespan of one month.
Lice can only live 24-48 hours off the human host. Harvard entomologist Richard Pollack, PhD, "If [lice] are not on a head, they get dehydrated and die very quickly. After about a day without a meal they starve to death," says Pollack.
Lice do not live in or on carpets or upholstery. Spending much time disinfecting, sterilizing, or spraying pesticides (organic or chemical) will only result in a cleaner living environment. It will do NOTHING to help eliminate lice where they live...on the human head. Spraying chemicals or organic treatments indoors is potentially harmful and completely unnecessary. Please see House De-Bugging Page for additional information from Harvard, NIH, and the CDC.
Nits hatch within approximately 7days.
Newly hatched baby lice (nymphs) are whitish-brown or tan in color and become adult lice approximately 10 days (17 days after hatching). Please refer to lice pictures.
Only mated adult head lice transfer to other hosts and lay eggs. Nits (lice eggs) must first hatch, molt three times and then mate before they can begin laying eggs. Please refer to life cycle.
Lice are relatively common (second to the common cold) and are not a sign of poor hygiene.
Lice do not spread diseases and they are not dangerous. However, the scalp may become red, irritated, and infected from frequent scratching.
Lice feed off human blood to survive. They have frequent blood meals throughout the day.
Over the counter (OTC) treatments only kill live lice. This is why they require two treatments. The first treatment only kills the live lice at that time. You must wait approximately 7 days for the remaining nits to hatch before applying the second treatment of the OTC product. It is the manual removal, or nit-picking, that actually eradicates the nits (lice eggs) from your hair and prevents re-infestation. If eggs remain in the hair, they will reach maturity within approximately 17 days, and begin laying eggs.
Lice WILL NOT go away unless treated. You must remove both lice and their eggs to become lice free. Unlike the common cold, which will remedy itself with time, a mild lice infestation can quickly grow out of control if left untreated.
Discreet Lice Removal can safely and efficiently solve your lice problems.
